What should I invest in?

Invest in what remains.

What matters is what remains.

In our lives, we invest in many things. What we invest comes in many forms but is covered primarily in four categories: time, energy, money and abilities. We spend these four things on things that matter to us in the moment. And yet if we take a step back and honestly analyze the things ‘in the moment’ that we are investing in, those may not be the most important or even the things that really matter in the long run.

Let me tell you, the things that really matter are the things that remain.

When the project you are working on now is long gone (and likely even forgotten) what will still remain in your life?

When the pressing concern at work is over and you return to your ‘normal’ life (whatever that is) what will still be there?

The reality is that we need to invest in things according to what will still be there (what will remain) when ‘it’ is all said and done.

Accordingly, what will remain after EVERYTHING else is gone, of course, is God. He is eternal, His Word is eternal, and He invites His children to live with Him forever. At the end of the day (today!) we may have invested in many things, but almost all of them will cease to be at some point yet God will remain. Invest in your spiritual life and your time with God above all else, because after all else is gone He will still remain.

After we tend to our spiritual walk with God the next thing that will (or could) remain after every work project, leisure activity, stressor and demand on our time is gone, is our family and close interpersonal relationships. At the end of a particularly busy time at work or an over-the-top demanding season of life who/what will still be left? Did you burn every bridge? Did you neglect, forget or forsake the most important things? Or did you invest in that which could and should remain after the temporary passes away?

Besides our spiritual life and our close relationships, attention also needs to be given to our physical, emotional and financial health. So please take the time to invest in what is important. Invest in what will remain at the end of the day. No on else can or will do it for you and you don’t want to carry regrets around with you when you could be counting your blessings instead. Invest in what remains.
